Friday Five: Laura's Dream Tattoos (and a contest)

And I do mean dream, because I'm a wus. Needles freak me out, but today's Friday Five is all about tats, and if you've read Any Ordinary Day, you know that Paul has an unusual one. Here are the five I'd get if I had the cojones. (Sorry - no pics. I couldn't find ones I liked on the Net and I didn't want to break out the Sharpies and the digital camera.)

1. I'm really into butterflies. I think one on the shoulder or lower back would be nice.

2. Always have liked the black Celtic armband thing. Of course, this look won't quite be the same on my flabby, pushing-40 arms, now will it?

3. A henna-look bracelet. Something delicate.

4. I've always been a big fan of paisleys. Maybe one that curls around my belly button on one side for an asymetric look.

5. A heart in a private area with my husband's name on it? I dunno. Unfortunately most people spell his name incorrectly, so I'll have to be real careful about this one...

Have a tat? Want one? Post a comment about the ink you have or want by 9 pm EST this Sunday, and I'll pick a winner soon after. The winner gets a $10 gift certificate at Loose Id to buy whatever they want. And if you've already read Any Ordinary Day and know about Paul's tattoo, email me off the blog at laura@laurabacchi.com with that info as well and I'll enter your name twice. Good luck!

Hi Laura,
I have three tattoo's, one of my maiden name on my thigh with a tiny turtle swimming through the middle, one of the hawaiian islands on my lower left side of my back with the last one a turtle with three little girle on it's back ,so it looks like a tribal tattoo......I was scared when I got my first, had to hold someones hand the whole time(and it tickled more than hurt) for comfort. I want a big dragon for my next tattoo, hopefully in the next couple years.*g*
Hugs, Danette

Those sound great! Love the Hawaiian islands idea. It's good to know it tickled. Dragons are definitely good.

I keep telling hubby if I ever make it into print, I'm getting one. We'll see...

Laura, You can't be to old for a tattoo, if you are, then I am. My daughter just turned 15 and wants me to get one with her. I'd like the something on my lower back, black only-celtic or indian, not sure yet. I want to, but my husband hates them. I am still thinking of doing it. I'm 43 and I think I could carry one off-we're not to old, we are just old enough now to know what we really want.

...old enough now to know what we really want. Yep, you're right. I shouldn't be so wimpy.

My husband's not too crazy about them either. I like the all-black ones. I saw a heart design made of black vines that looked really cool. Have fun picking one out!

Hi Laura,

I'm a wus like you. I always said I wanted a tattoo, but couldn't stand the pain of getting one. But the one I've always wanted was a black panther lying idle, but claws out, as if he's trying to dig into my flesh. I envision this one on my hip for some reason. Or, if I were to do an arm tattoo, I'd want a cat hanging on with all four claws (like he's attached to a tree trunk or something), with a few slide marks. Yes, maybe I'm a bit too much into the pain concept, but not the reality. LOL....wonder if I need a therapist for this weird contradiction in desires? Oh well. I haven't read your book yet, but I'm intrigued now about the tattoo. I might have to pick it up. :)
Congrats on your latest book. I have to say, I love the cover, and that alone made me consider buying it. :)

Hi Dr. Daniel - I like the panther/cat idea, especially the panther on the hip. You could have the slide marks peeking out above your waistband and intrigue the heck out of everyone.

On the reality vs. fantasy of pain. I think the contradiction is probably common - no therapy needed :) (Think of all the $ I saved you LOL) I have plans for a short story where a man keeps going in for a tat or a piercing and always chickens out at the last moment. The artist finally finds a way to help him through it ;)

If you decide to pick up AOD, I hope you enjoy it!

Oh, I'm just now noticing my Friday Five posted on Thursday. I messed with the time setting the other day and apparently forgot to switch it back. Sorry for the confusion. It's my normal state of mind these days... :)

I got my first tat at 38, my hubby wasn't crazy about the idea, but wouldn't change how he felt about me. So I had one put on, I got a dragonfly with out names and wedding date put on my shoulder and I absolutely love and would do it again in a heart beat!*grin* It's weird cause I think he ended up liking me branded with his name as I think he's shown it off more when we've been out than I did! LOL! I don't think you're ever too old to do something that makes you feel good. :o)

They don't hurt. Except in odd places like the shin bone and the back of your arm.

I have 3. First was a ring I lost (won't do that again) when I was 18. When I was 20 I got a Cymric dragon on my arm and a tiger moth on my calf in the same night.

I love your henna bracelet idea. I've been contemplating knotted vines for a while now, but in a woad blue colour.

Now, to convince The Man it's a good idea.....

I got a little butterfly on my ankle when I was 19. It was scandalous at the time (not everyone had them then) and everyone thought it was so out of character for me. What a difference 18 years make!
I do want another, I am thinking along the line of swirls and stars, probably 2 stars to symbolize my heathens...er...children.

I have a tattoo I got when I was 18. My mom went with me. I designed it myself, too. It's a dagger piercing a heart with a rose vine intertwining around it. There's also a butterfly going toward the rose. I got it on my ankle and I agree it tickled more than anything.

Hi Julie - I really like the idea of incorporating names, personal things, etc. in the design.

Hi Seeley - the fingers sounds painful. I wasn't familiar with tiger moths - Googled it - they're very pretty. Good luck convincing The Man!

You're brave, Gwen! They say ankles hurt like heck. Good luck with the new tats - and the heathens LOL School starts Monday here :)

Hi Shonna - we must've been posting at the same time :) - so maybe ankles tats aren't as bad as I've heard. Yours sounds great - today I'm leaning toward a butterfly... Maybe use my daughter's name in the design with her birthdate thanks, like Julie did with hers. Hmmm...

I like the way tatoos look and I've done the henna thing but I'm not ready for the needle. I don't even like going to get shots.

If I was going to get one- something girly.

When I was deciding about my tattoo, at first I wasn't sure of where I'd get it. I had an animal in mind, but when my hubby used an erasable marker to try it out on my rear end, I thought, that just looks weird. Not so much because it was a stick figured animal, but because of the placement. We went to the parlor, which was in NC; at the time, tattoo parlors were illegal in SC. I looked at their examples of my animal and thought they looked too cartoony. So we went home and ordered chinese. Hey! Look at that menu! There's my Panda!....So, now I have a one of a kind tattoo that we designed off of the chinese menu. My other tat is a rose on my left breast that my dear man picked out. I get a rose from him everyday, sorta. Awww.

I have a rose tattoo on my chest. Yes, it hurt lol. I'm planning a couple more. A devil that I haven't decided where to put yet and something combining my kids first initials. I'd like that one on the back on my neck but I'm not sure it would be small enough.

I'm not sure there's a too old. I'm 35 and just got mine this summer. ;)

Hi Laura, I have three also. The first one I got was a dove carrying a rose (right leg), the second a heart w/a rose (left inner leg) and the third, two roses with one of my daughters names on the top, the other daughters name on the bottom. I ned to add my son's name to it.....but haven't done it yet.

Another needle phobic! Kissa, you and I will just watch the others add to theirs :)

I love your story, Leigh! And thanks for posting a picture of it at Romance Divas. It's so cute!

Eek, Loribelle! It hurts just to think about it. Devils are fun. Could go in lots of interesting places ;)

Hi, Lyric! I'm seeing lots of really cool rose designs on the net. Maybe I should add flowers to the list. A big red peony maybe...

And the winner is.... Danette! Congratulations!! Please email me when you get a chance so that I can send your gift certificate info.

Thanks to everyone who commented - I really enjoyed hearing about your tattoos... or that you're just as afraid as I am. But if I ever make a single title print sale, I'm going to seriously consider one to celebrate. We'll see...

A tattoo, me,I don't have one!! Come on!!
Well, the one I have you see it everytime I comment. But I'm still wonerding about getting a new one, probably on one of my foot. Still didn't figure that part out!!
And after a minute, your skin go numb.

Laura Bacchi said...

So will they let me get drunk, you know, bring a bottle of tequila in with me? Then I can guarantee I won't feel a thing. :) Love your tat!

Great accompanying graphic! Hi there. I always wanted a wild cat tat on my ankle, but I have to admit I'm a bit of a wimp. A lady I work for told me she cried and she didn't even know that she was scaring me. Maybe one of these days.

Laura Bacchi said...

Hi Annalee! I hope you're doing well. If I ever get the nerve to do one, I'll let you know how it goes.

Jill said...

Laura, some won't accept to tattoo you if you are under the influence!!
Just take something for the pain, and you would be good!

I already know so many people with tattoo regret and most of them are still in their mid-twenties...just wait till you pass 50 and you are going to feel like a real dumbass--especially since they be all faded and blury on your loose skin.
